The question of education reform could come to a head in the Legislature today.

A committee of representatives from both chambers is trying to agree on ballot language for a constitutional amendment that could be put to the voters this fall. The question would be whether to convert the now-elected board of education to a board appointed by the governor.

The proposed amendments don’t go far enough for Gov. Linda Lingle, who believes the governor should appoint the superintendent and wants to abolish the board altogether. Lingle is so committed to her plan that she has made it a condition of releasing funds to end Furlough Fridays.

This is all happening in the name of improved accountability.
