Noteworthy today: The board of education may cancel next year’s Furlough Fridays without guaranteed funds to pay for those days; there’s a “teach-in” at the state capitol on this year’s final Furlough Friday; and the state may be easing charter school restrictions soon.

  • In an surprising move, the school board says it may cancel next year’s furlough days before Gov. Linda Lingle releases relief money to fund those work days, the Honolulu Advertiser reported today.

  • A “teach-in” is taking place today at the state capitol to mark the school year’s final Furlough Friday, reported in Aloha Update this week.

  • Many states have been trying to prevent the spread of charter schools or limit them altogether, USA Today reported. But Hawaii and others may be easing their restrictions on charter schools in order to be more competitive for federal Race to the Top funds.

  • The New York Times reports on why education expert Diane Ravitch believes choice and testing are overratedin public schools. She recently wrote a book about the subject.

  • A new public-interest law firm, Levin Education Access Project, will advocate for Hawaii children, Pacific Business News reported.

  • The University of Hawaii will graduate 2,400 this Saturday morning, according to a report in Pacific Business News. The ceremony will be streamed live at manoa.hawaii.edu/commencement.
