Every day, I’m scouring the Internet for land use and environmental news from around the state and around the world that means something for us here in Hawaii. Noteworthy today: Trash Vortex 101, a bypass saves hours on the Big Island and more response to the BP oil spill.
- A quick two-minute “Trash Vortex 101” video look at the Pacific Garbage Patch. Who, What, Where, When, Why and How.
- This video was posted to YouTube last year, but I found it yesterday as I start thinking about solid waste issues:
- Mamalahoa Bypass on the Big Island’s Kona side has extended its hours and is now open to traffic in both directions following a deal between Hawaii County and Hokulia’s developer, West Hawaii Today reports.
- Debunking British Petroleum’s claims, the government confirmed Tuesday that plumes of dispersed oil were spreading below the ocean surface, according to the New York Times.
- And lastly, be forewarned: A story published by satirical newspaper The Onion in its coverage of BP’s public response to the oil spill has an expletive in the headline. And again in the first 12 paragraphs. And in two photo captions.
