Every day, I’m scouring the Internet for land use and environmental news from around the state and around the world that means something for us here in Hawaii. Noteworthy today: preventing floods on Oahu’s North Shore and debating the Thirty Meter Telescope.

• Dole Foods announced a plan to fix three broken flood gates on Oahu’s North Shore. Residents are tired of loss and damage over the years, Hawaii News Now says.
• The University of Hawaii Board of Regents will debate whether to grant final approval to the billion-dollar Thirty Meter Telescope project.
• The Kauai Planning Commission has approved a 6,000-square-foot farm dwelling for a sod farm. We highlighted The Garden Island’s previous coverage last week.
• The Hawaii County Council fell one vote shy of putting a 2 percent land fund on the ballot in November. Voters will have a choice between 1 percent and nothing.
• A Hawaii appeals court says county zoning is not subject to state environmental law, according to the Hawaii Land Use Law and Policy Blog.
• The state of California has struck a deal to sell the Orange County Fairgrounds to the City of Costa Mesa.
• Despite a directive from the EPA, BP continues to use dispersants in the gulf — now 272,000 gallons of it.
