Since losing the Democratic primary for governor, Mufi Hannemann has not gone into the wilderness.
While nowhere near as busy as when he was running “the 12th-largest city in America,” as he was fond of saying, the former Honolulu mayor has kept a steady schedule of events and appearances, according to his Twitter handle @MufiHannemann.
His itinerary has included thanking supporters on the neighbor islands and attending a transportation meeting in San Antonio, Texas, keeping the former — and future? — candidate in the public eye. He’s also pushing the candidacy of his former opponent, Neil Abercrombie.
Hannemann no longer has a constituency but he still has more than 600,000 Twitter followers — 607,743, to be exact, down from 609,816 followers during the week of the Sept. 18 primary election.
Though Hannemann (or someone who works for him) is not tweeting anywhere near the number of tweets sent out before the primary — see “Mufi’s Tweet to the Finish Line” — he doesn’t appear to be just sitting on the sofa watching sports.
In the two weeks between Sept. 19 and Oct. 3, Hannemann has thanked supporters in Hilo and Kona (where he’s asked volunteers to take down his campaign signs), spent a “relaxing but productive day on the Garden Isle,” spent a day on Molokai (“Hawaii’s Friendly Isle”) and attended the 88th Maui County Fair (check out the photos).
This week Hannemann is attending the annual meeting of the American Public Transportation Association in San Antonio, Texas.
“Yes, he will be traveling for a few weeks, taking some time off,” former campaign spokeswoman Brooke Wilson wrote in an e-mail responding to questions from Civil Beat. “Since the election, he has traveled the State thanking his supporters for all their help, etc. He is also using his social media network to articulate his support for Neil.”
To wit:
• Sept. 19: “Mahalo to my volunteers and supporters for all of their efforts. Congratulations to @neilabercrombie: http://j.mp/csHasp”
• Sept. 19: “@mufihannemann remains very committed to @neilabercrombie winning Washington Place #hivote”
• Sept. 27: “Find out more about Hawaii’s Democratic ticket for Governor/LG: @NeilAbercrombie and @BrianSchatz at http://www.neilabercrombie.com.”
Some of Hannemann’s other posts have been rather banal — e.g., “Happy Aloha Friday, everyone!” on Sept. 24 and “Happy October, everyone!” and “The Civil Defense sirens will be sounding in an hour. Don’t worry; it’s just a monthly test!” on Oct. 1.
Some have been mildly helpful — e.g., “Flu season is coming up…if you’d like to get this year’s vaccine, visit http://www.flu.gov/ to find the nearest clinic!”
(Hey, @DukeAiona2010 — are you following @Mufi Hannemann?)
Other Hannemann tweets have been reflective — e.g., “My family and friends in Samoa are on my mind today as we recall the one-year anniversary of the 2009 earthquake and tsunami.”
But politics is clearly Hannemann’s kuleana, as seen from these posted Monday morning:
• “Be sure to follow our Democratic ticket: @NeilAbercrombie and @BrianSchatz.”
• “@mufihannemann remains very committed to @neilabercrombie winning Washington Place #hivote”
• “Senator Daniel_Inouye was profiled today by the @WashingtonPost. Give the article a read here: http://wapo.st/9F7MGt”
• “Today is the last day to register to vote in Hawaii! Register here: http://j.mp/voterReg”
• “Just a few more hours left to register to vote in Hawaii! Download the forms here & get it into the clerks’ office! http://j.mp/voterReg”
With all the extra time on his hands, Mufi Hannemann probably now has more time to read the tweets of the people he follows, too.
The list of 1,741 people Hannemann follows includes bipartisan political interests — national: Al Gore, Mike Huckabee, Haley Barbour, Gavin Newsom, Mike Bloomberg, Rick Perry, Arnold Schwarzenegger, NPR and Fox News — and local: Neil Abercrombie, Duke Aiona, Ed Case, Charles Djou, Jon Riki Karamatsu, Panos Prevedouros, Kirk Caldwell, Peter Carlisle and the HGEA.
Hannemann also follows the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, city spokesman Bill Brennan, rail PR guy Doug Carlson, PR firm McNeil Wilson, online whiz Ryan Ozawa, MMA dude BJ Penn, TV dude Duane Dog Chapman, TV queen Oprah Winfrey, actress Kelly Cho, weatherman Guy Hagi, activist Hannah Miyamoto and the pubisher, editors and reporter-hosts at Honolulu Civil Beat.
Also: Whole Foods Kahala, Indigo Ultra Lounge, Korean Taco Truck, Tamura’s Fine Wine — and 808Jobs (Help Wanted Hawaii) and Jobs_Honolulu.
