Hawaii’s volcanoes are a state icon. Now it turns out that they also may be the shallowest in the world, and much shallower than previously thought. An undergraduate student in earth sciences at Ohio State University presented findings Tuesday that Hawaii’s magna chamber lies 1.9 to 2.5 miles below the surface. In Iceland, the magna chambers are at an average depth of 12.4 miles. Julie Ditkof’s chemical analysis could be used to help predict more accurately when eruptions might occur.
