Surfers will have to wait another day to ride in the Eddie Aikau Surf Invitational.

The waves at Waimea Bay were plenty big, but inconsistent, prompting tournament officials on Thursday morning to call off the contest, which requires a minimum of 20-foot wave heights (40-foot faces) to come crashing down on Oahu’s North Shore.

Thousands of spectators had crowded the shores of and cliffs overlooking the bay. Contest official kept pushing back the call on whether the Eddie would happen, making the final decision around 9 a.m.
