Hawaii Congresswoman Mazie Hirono wants the debt limit to be raised to $16.7 trillion, and says she supports House Resolution 2544, which entails such an increase.

In a statement on her website, Hirono called the measure “clean,” meaning it is absent of political bargaining chips that have caused debt talks to stall. With neither party budging in increasingly tense debt talks, such a measure may ultimately be the vehicle to prevent a government default. The measure is not free of partisanship, though: Its sponsors nicknamed it the Don’t Default on America’s Debts and Destroy American Jobs Act of 2011.

Minnesota Democrat Betty McCollum introduced the resolution, which would also cancel any congressional recesses until a deal is reached to increase jobs, reduce unemployment and chip away at the nation’s longterm debt. H.R. 2544 was referred to the House Ways and Means Committee for consideration.
