A day after the Council for a Livable World announced that it is supporting Congresswoman Mazie Hirono in her run for Senate, Hirono had this to say about the nuclear disarmament nonprofit’s mission:

“Some of the most serious issues we face as a nation are nuclear weapons falling into the hands of terrorists and the spread of nuclear weapons to unstable, non-nuclear states,” Hirono told DC808 via a spokeswoman. “The bipartisan work of President Obama and Republican Senator Richard Lugar to prevent proliferation and reduce the risk of nuclear terrorism is vital to our national security.”

The council is also endorsing the following Senate campaigns in 2012: Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), Rep. Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.), Sen. Jon Tester (D-Mont.).

In the past, the council has endorsed Rep. Colleen Hanabusa, Sen. Daniel Inouye, Sen. Daniel Akaka and former Sen. Spark Matsunaga.
