Rep. Colleen Hanabusa on Tuesday spoke in favor of an amendment that would require a “worst-case oil spill scenario” for the proposed Keystone XL pipeline. House members rejected Hanabusa’s amendment, along with nearly a dozen others related to the $13 billion Canada-to-Texas pipeline.
“We are talking about a 2,000-mile pipeline from Alberta to the Gulf Coast,” Hanabusa said on Tuesday. “The people of this great country, after experiencing the BP oil spill, expect us to address and recognize that that type of catastrophe may occur.”
Rep. Lee Terry (R-Nebra.) said such a catastrophe had already been “modeled out.”
“The analysis of a worst-case-scenario spill is already part of the application,” Terry said. “It’s part of the environmental impact statement.”
He says pumps would shut down within nine minutes in the event of a “worst-case discharge.”
