Reps. Colleen Hanabusa and Mazie Hirono are proposing naming a Kahala post office after former Congressman Cecil “Cec” Heftel.

Their proposal would formally make the post office on Pahoa Avenue the Cecil L. Heftel Post Office Building. It comes after a separate proposal to honor Heftel by former Congressman Charles Djou, who wanted a Makiki post office named for Heftel.

Heftel represented Hawaii’s 1st congressional district for a decade in the 1970s and 1980s. He left Washington in 1986 to run for governor against John Waihee, who was ultimately elected.

Heftel died in February 2010. He was 85.
