Sen. Daniel Akaka wants the federal government to “make good” on its commitments to Compact of Free Association, or COFA, migrants in the United States.

Akaka introduced Senate Bill 1504, along with Sen. Daniel Inouye and Sen. Jeff Bingaman (D-N.M.), to restore Medicaid coverage for those who moved to the U.S. under the COFA agreement.

Akaka’s office says about 12,215 COFA citizens lived in Hawaii as of 2008, up from 7,297 five years before.
