Giffords’ Return Buoys D.C.’s Spirits

Washington is still abuzz about the surprise return of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) to Congress last night. After a long standing ovation, the House erupted in a cheer when she cast her first vote — a “yes” to help pass the debt deal — since she was shot in the head during a meet-and-greet with constituents in January. 

DC808, along with dozens of other stunned Capitol Hill reporters, looked on from the House gallery as a radiant Giffords greeted her ecstatic colleagues. The one word we kept hearing over and over: “Wow.”

It was a moving moment to say the least. On Monday night, we shared a Twitter post from Rep. Colleen Hanabusa, who wrote: “Welcome back, Gabby!” 

Sen. Daniel Akaka and Rep. Mazie Hirono also posted well wishes to Twitter.
