Sens. Daniel Inouye and Daniel Akaka on Wednesday announced a bill that aims to remove obstacles to international trade.

The measure is being called the APEC Travel Card Act. APEC refers to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation global conference that is set to be held in Honolulu in November.

The act would allow expedited international travel for senior government officials and business leaders involved in APEC. Participants would have to obtain a special travel card, and would only be able to travel between the 21 APEC countries.

“This bill is a common sense measure that will advance U.S. trade with other APEC nations by expediting travel for U.S. business leaders and government officials engaged in APEC-related business,” said Akaka in a statement issued to reporters.

Sens. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) and Ron Johnson (R-Wisc.) are co-sponsors of the act, which is based on an existing travel card program that is not yet available to U.S. passport holders who take part in APEC.
