We talk about diversity a lot in Hawaii, and it’s a point of pride that no single group makes up the majority. (Read Civil Beat‘s recent Fact Check about Hawaii having “the most diverse population” on Earth.)

Check out this graphic by The Washington Post, which reports that minorities are now the majority in 22 of the country’s 100 largest metro areas. Mostly, the newspaper examines shrinking white populations. Honolulu has long been on the list of “majority-minority” cities, but eight of the regions are newcomers since 2000.

Honolulu remains distinctive for its more balanced mix of many different backgrounds.
