Capitol on Aug. 23

People have evacuated buildings across D.C. after an earthquake that was felt as far as 35 miles outside the city.

The mood on the sidewalk is mostly calm, with many people joking about “the end of days” or suggesting that the partisan divide on Capitol Hill literally split the Earth. But there is a palpable degree of apprehension.  

“This feels just like 9/11,” a museum staffer standing on Pennsylvania Avenue said.
