Civil Beat pointed out that Congresswoman Mazie Hirono is opting not to host a traditional town hall meeting during the congressional recess this month.

Politico found that 60 percent of House lawmakers are skipping the forums. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa is in the minority of representatives with town hall plans.

A spokesman for Hirono explained that the representative is instead holding community events with a narrower focus: Foreclosure.

“Congresswoman Hirono is hosting the foreclosure events in lieu of traditional town halls because so many constituents have been hit so hard by this crisis that she wanted to bring help and resources directly to them,” sposkeman Marvin Buenconsejo told DC808 in an email.

Hirono heads to Maui this weekend, where she’ll connect residents with foreclosure-related resources and contacts.

“There are going to be a lot of really good resources for folks who need help, including representatives from the Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Hawaii, the Veterans Affairs Loan Guaranty Program and Legal Aid Society of Hawaii,” Buenconsejo said.

The event will be held at the Maui Waena Intermediate School Cafeteria from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
