Sens. Daniel Inouye and Daniel Akaka have said that they’re not going to pick favorites in the Democratic primary for the Senate seat Akaka is vacating in 2012.

But it seems pretty clear they’re not standing behind former Congressman Ed Case, who fell out of favor with the Dans when he unsuccessfully challenged Akaka in 2006.

A spokeswoman for Hawaii Government Employees Association Executive Director Randy Perreira confirmed to DC808 that Inouye and Akaka attended a Washington fundraiser that Perreira hosted in his capacity as Hawaii’s AFL-CIO president last week.

The National Journal billed the event as a fundraiser for Rep. Mazie Hirono, who is battling Case for Akaka’s Senate seat. Here’s how the National Journal’s Sean Sullivan put it: “The extent to which Democratic establishment figures and groups are encouraging (or protecting) Hirono is becoming clearer.”
