The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced on Wednesday that it has finalized an order that will require Maui County to fully disinfect all wastewater at the Lahaina Wastewater Reclamation Facility

EPA determined that treated wastewater going into the facility’s wells contains bacteria that threatens the drinking water. The new treatment requirements also help prevent pollution in nearby coastal waters and increase the county’s supply of recycled wastewater, the EPA said.
