Have you seen more of Neal Milner‘s byline around town lately? It must be campaign season! Milner is one of Hawaii’s go-to political scientists. 

In a piece published by Civil Beat this morning, Milner offered interesting analysis of the race taking form in Hawaii’s 2nd Congressional District, where Honolulu City Council member Tulsi Gabbard and former Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann are both vying for Democrats’ support.

Hannemann has immense name-recognition. Gabbard, despite coming from a political family, does not. But that could work to Gabbard’s advantage. As Milner puts it: “It may be easier for Gabbard to fill a vacuum than it is for Hannemann to break a mold.”
