Facing bankruptcy that could force mass layoffs and the closure of thousands of post offices around the country, the U.S. Postal Service is hosting a series of town hall meetings to get input from the public.

Rep. Mazie Hirono issued a reminder about the following meetings that will be held this week and later this month to discuss the four post offices slated for possible closure in Hawaii:

• Uptown Station on Nuuanu Avenue in Honolulu, Sept. 8 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.

• Kapolei High School Cafeteria, Sept. 8 from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m.

• McVeigh Social Hall in Kalaupapa, Sept. 20 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.

• Hanamaulu Station on Kauai, Sept. 22 from 9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.

Feedback to the USPS must be received by the end of this month, according to Hirono’s office. As Hirono focuses on the post offices in and around her district, the Obama administration is trying to save the Postal Service as a whole.

The White House has asked lawmakers to grant a 90-day extension so that the Postal Service has more time to pay millions of dollars in annual payments that are due when the fiscal year ends on Sept. 30. Read more from The Washington Post.
