It’s deadline day for Honolulu city officials tasked with bringing a Wahiawa elderly care center into compliance with federal grant standards. 

At stake is $7.9 million in U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) funds that the city will have to repay if it doesn’t help ORI Anuenue Hale meet federal requirements. A HUD spokeswoman told DC808 that the city’s response is expected to come in at the last possible moment.

“I just heard from our Honolulu folks and they said they don’t expect to get the City’s response until close of business today,” HUD spokeswoman Gene Gibson said in an email. ”Our folks said that they know that the City is working hard on the response, and reports from the City were positive. Our folks hope that their written response is also positive.”
