Rep. Mazie Hirono is one of nine members of Congress traveling to Haiti on Monday to meet with government officials as part of the U.S. House Democracy Partnership Program.

The goal of the trip is “to promote and support their efforts to democratizing their institutions and government,” Hirono said in a conference call with Hawaii reporters on Friday evening.

“For a government like Haiti which underwent tremendous devastation, they’re just building back up,” she said.

Hirono plans to depart Washington Monday morning and return from Haiti that night.
