Sen. Daniel Inouye attended a ceremony for the conferral of the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Paulownia Flowers, the highest honor that Japan gives to foreign citizens, on Monday night.

The event was held at Japan Ambassador Ichiro Fujisaki‘s residence. According to Inouye’s office, the senator is the seventh American and first Japanese-American to receive the honor. The award was first announced in June.

“I am very grateful and humbled,” Inouye wrote in a post to Twitter.

Vice President Joe Biden stopped by the Monday evening ceremony. His Twitter account was updated to include a photo from the event:

Sen. Daniel Akaka also attended the event. A spokesman for Akaka said Sens. Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J., Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., and Richard Shelby, R-Ala., also turned out to show their support for Inouye.
