The state of Maryland put an end to Hawaii’s three-year streak of boasting the most millionaires per capita, according to the firm Phoenix Marketing International.

Hawaii has 33,461 households with at least $1 million in investable assets on-hand. That’s 7.21 percent of the population. Maryland’s 157,779 millionaire households represent 7.22 percent of the population.

Rounding out the top-five are New Jersey, Connecticut and Massachusetts.

UPDATED at 5:38 p.m. on 10/28/11: An earlier version of this post erroneously reported that Hawaii has 464,352 millionaire households and Maryland has 2.2 million millionaire households. Those figure reflects the total number of households in Hawaii and Maryland, respectively, according to Phoenix Marketing International. DC808 regrets the error. Read the full rankings.
