Lobbyists for Taiwan have been working to convince the United States to sell them some F-16 fighter jets, and reaching out to Sen. Daniel Inouye in the process, according to The Hill. 

Former Sen. Alfonse D’Amato, R-N.Y., runs the lobbying firm Park Strategies, which The Hill describes as one of the more “aggressive” lobby shops for Taiwan. D’Amato wrote this to Inouye in an email: 

“You were one of my dearest friends when I was in the Senate… And it would mean a lot to me if you ever visit Taiwan this year.”
