One topic that came up: The possibility of adding faregates, or turnstiles, to the planned Honolulu rail system. For now, they aren’t part of the plan.
“Certainly, the importance of faregates, not only for security and obviously revenue-collection but also statistics,” Hui said. “If you don’t have faregates, it’s very hard to keep track of who’s coming and going.”
Hui also said he was intrigued by some of the public-private partnership ideas he heard. One example: Transit systems that partner with bicycle- and car-sharing services, to increase mobility around stations.
