Sen. Daniel Akaka is hosting a special event in his capacity as chairman of the Indian Affairs Committee on Wednesday.

The program is called “Way of the Warrior: Native Americans’ Committment to Country, Community and Communication,” and will be held on Capitol Hill.

The idea is to highlight unique ways that indigenous people including Native Hawaiians have contributed to the U.S. military.

One example Akaka’s office gives: The tribal code-talkers who successfully transmitted secret messages to one another in native languages during World War II.
