The last time Congress cut its own pay was in 1933, during the Great Depression, according to Hanabusa’s office.
Hanabusa signed a letter that a group of lawmakers sent to the congressional super committee that’s tasked with cutting at least $1.2 trillion in federal spending over a 10-year period. The committee has until Thanksgiving to outline its plan to do so.
Right now, members of Congress make $174,000 per year. Hanabusa’s office said that a 5 percent pay cut would amount to $50 million over the course of a decade.
“I think it’s time for members of Congress to lead by example,” Hanabusa said in a statement. “The savings are not huge, but we need to clearly show that while we are asking for sacrifice, we are willing to sacrifice as well.”
