The Department of Defense announced on Thursday that it successfully completed the launch of an advanced hypersonic weapon from the Pacific Missile Range Facility on Kauai.

The long-range weapon is a “first-of-its-kind glide vehicle” that’s designed to fly at hypersonic speed, the Defense Department said. Its destination is the Kwajalein Atoll more than 2,000 miles away.

The objective of the launch is to test range performance and collect other data related to navigation, aerodynamics, control and thermal protection technologies, according to the Defense Department.
