U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland issued a statement wishing the Federated States of Micronesia “progress, prosperity and peace” in observance of independence day.

As Micronesians strive for a better future, we look forward to continuing to cooperate on important issues, from strengthening regional security to mitigating environmental threats to improving health and education services for all Micronesians,” Nuland said. “I am grateful to the Micronesians who have served and continue to serve voluntarily in the United States Armed Forces.

It has been 25 years since the Federated States of Micronesia attained independence through a Compact of Free Association with the United States.

Hawaii Congresswoman Colleen Hanabusa on Wednesday introduced a bill that would provide the state with more resources to fulfill its obligations to Micronesians under that compact.
