
National attention has turned to Hawaii since Lingle, a prominent Republican, made the announcement last month that she would run to replace Sen. Daniel Akaka, who is retiring.
The other seven states that The New York Times put in the “tossup” category include: Massachusetts, Nevada, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Virginia and Wisconsin. The majority of those states are up for grabs for Republicans, with only Massachusetts and Nevada poised to be reclaimed by Democrats, the newspaper reports.
