President Barack Obama is directing federal agencies to move toward digital-based records keeping as a way to save money and increase transparency. He issued a presidential memorandum regarding modernizing records on Monday. 

“The current federal records management system is based on an outdated approach involving paper and filing cabinets,” Obama said in a statement. “Today’s action will move the process into the digital age so the American public can have access to clear and accurate information about the decisions and actions of the Federal Government.”

The National Archives and Records Administration took in nearly 5 billion pages of records in the past decade, according to the White House.
