The measure would allow the service to offer buyouts to workers as a way to reduce the employee base, a move that the committee said could save as much as $8 billion a year.
The bill would prohibit the Postal Service from scrapping Saturday delivery “until it develops remedies for customers who may be affected disproportionately by the change in service.”
The panel also OKed an amendment by Sen. Daniel Akaka to nix a provision that would have forced Medicare-eligible retirees out of their federal health care program and into the entitlement program.
A spokesman for Akaka told DC808 that there are 2,400 postal workers in Hawaii.
