State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland confirmed to Civil Beat that the 27-year-old federal agent who is charged with the shooting death of a Kailua man over the weekend was in Hawaii for APEC.

During a briefing with reporters at the U.S. State Department on Monday, Nuland called the incident “tragic,” and said that the State Department has been in contact with Christopher Deedy, the federal agent who allegedly shot 23-year-old Kollin Elderts at a Waikiki McDonald’s.

Nuland said Deedy is still a “full employee” of the State Department, but has been placed on paid administrative leave. Read the full story.

Nuland discussed the shooting during a press briefing in Washington, D.C., on Monday afternoon.
