NPR has launched a series about the state of the long-term unemployed. By the federal government’s definition, that group includes 5.7 million Americans who have been out of work for at least 27 weeks.
Determining how many Hawaii residents fall into that category isn’t easy (read more about why from the Economic Research Organization at the University of Hawaii).
NPR surveyed people who have been out of work for even longer than the federal government’s definition — at least one year. Poll results show that being unemployed in the long term causes a spate of financial, emotional and physical problems.
