Sen. Daniel Akaka is among a group of 14 senators who signed onto a letter asking Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius to explain her decision to block the unrestricted sale of the morning-after pill, the Washington Post reports

The Democratic senators asked Sebelius for the scientific thinking behind her decision, which family-planning advocates, women’s rights groups and others have blasted. 

“On behalf of the millions of women we represent, we want to be assured that this and future decisions affecting women’s health will be based on medical and scientific evidence,” the senators wrote.
