Turns out that some of those beautiful reef fish you see in the ocean don’t stay there. Many end up in private collectors’ tanks on the mainland, in large part because Hawaii doesn’t have uniform protections barring private aquarium traders from snatching them up.
Now, Maui residents have taken matters into their own hands:
Maui residents lined the streets of Kahului Thursday protesting PETCO’s sale of reef fish, according to Maui Now.
Protestors allege that a yellow tang died at the store.
A PETCO official said that in response to community feedback, the store was phasing out its sale of some Hawaiian reef fish.
