Hawaii Medical Center ended up laying off about 500 employees on Christmas Eve, more than the 200 the company originally anticipated.

The company expects to let go a total of 990 employees as it winds down operations at its two bankrupt Oahu hospitals.

The Ewa location could close this week as it has just five patients remaining, according to Pacific Business News. Its Liliha hospital has 25 patients.
