The changes will be unveiled next March. The move also gives the museum a chance to rebrand itself after merging with The Contemporary Museum.
The decision by the museum’s board comes after research showed that only 13 percent of tourists surveyed thought that the name Honolulu Academy of Arts denoted a museum, while 47 percent of tourists surveyed thought that the Academy was only an art school.
“If we’re a museum, we need to call ourselves a museum,” Museum Director Stephan Jost said in a statement.
