No, it’s not about Hawaii. But filmmakers Marshall Curry and Sam Cullman have made a fascinating documentary about the Earth Liberation Front, which made headlines as eco-terrorists in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

It can be streamed on Netflix.

The documentary eschews the often two-dimensional depiction of the hippie, radical environmentalists versus the giant corporations for a much more nuanced and intriguing view the movement.

Of particular note, is its look into the Seattle protests against the World Trade Organization in 1999, which elevated pepper spray to a whole new level.

In light of the papaya vandalism story making headlines again this week, I thought it might be a good time to watch it.
