Sen. Daniel Inouye is endorsing California Democrat Mark Takano in his bid for the U.S. House. If Takano wins, he’ll be the first openly gay person of color to serve in Congress, according to the LGBT publication Washington Blade.

A spokesman for Inouye confirmed the senator’s endorsement, which is significant because Inouye is often reluctant to publicly back a candidate before a primary election (another recent exception is Inouye’s support for Rep. Mazie Hirono in her Senate campaign).
