The Hawaii Department of Taxation put out a terse statement Thursday evening saying it has uncovered internal security breaches of its computer tax database dating back to at least 2008.

Few details were shared, but it seems serious considering the department has put “a number” of people on administrative leave without pay while an investigation is being conducted.

“The possibility of wrongful actions are extremely disturbing, which is why these matters were immediately reported to the Attorney General,” Tax Director Fred Pablo said in the statement. Even the governor put out a separate release, saying that anyone involved “will be brought to account.”
