New Year’s Eve could turn out to be quieter on Oahu this year.

Firecracker permit sales are down by about 15 percent compared to last year, according to the Star-Advertiser (subscription).

The newspaper reports that the city has sold 8,461 permits this year at $25 apiece. The city has issued just 43 retail licenses to businesses — down from an average of 143 licenses in recent years.

Firecrackers with accompanying permits are the only legal option for Oahu residents. All consumer and novelty fireworks — including sparklers and fountains — are prohibited under a Honolulu law that went into effect Jan. 1.
