Update to our story on closing the camping permit window in Wahiawa:

honolulu-politics:

Within three months, you’ll be able to secure coveted Honolulu camping permits on the Internet, if everything goes as planned.

Department of Information Technology Director Gordon Bruce tells Inside Honolulu that he’s been working with the Department of Parks and Recreation with the goal of making online permits available before the end of the first quarter of 2012.

Bruce said his team is ”writing the code right now” and is making efforts to ensure the system is fair, equitable and capable of handling the type of demand that forced the city to shutter the camping permit window in Wahiawa.

“We’re not sure what kind of traffic we’re going to get at 12:01 a.m. when permits become available,” Bruce said. “It’s a somewhat complicated application because you have to write it in such a way that someone can’t go in and commandeer multiple sites.”
