The Hawaii Department of Transportation scored a $13.5 million federal grant for improvements to Saddle Road on the Big Island.

“Currently, drivers do not fully utilize this route for cross-island travel because it is considered one of the state’s most hazardous highways,” according to a U.S. Department of Transportion report on the grants. “Roadway improvements will include horizontal and vertical realignments, add uphill passing lanes, and construct truck escape ramps.”

In all, the federal government will fund 46 transportation projects in 33 states and Puerto Rico to the tune of $511 million.
