After heated debate over provisions related to the handling of terrorism suspects, the Senate passed a $662 billion defense bill on Thursday. It now goes to the president to be signed into law. 

Obama had threatened to veto the bill over the controversial detainee provisions, but the White House subsequently lifted the veto threat after changes were made to the bill. Some civil liberties advocates argue that the changes still don’t go far enough.
