Aside from the glaring error in the first paragraph stating the federal environmental lawsuit against the project was filed in the last few weeks (actual filing: May 12), something else stood out. Or rather, the lack of something else.
Anti-rail Honolulu City Council member Tom Berg isn’t in the story. Not just not quoted, but not mentioned at all. It’s a glaring omission considering the moves Berg has made recently to stop or change the rail project.
The two most obvious ones are a failed resolution to introduce a charter amendment to stop steel-on-steel technology and a sparsely-attended town hall meeting to discuss alternatives.
Panos Prevedouros gets a mention, and the story has a sidebar Q&A with Council Budget Chair Ann Kobayashi, herself a rail skeptic. But Berg is totally absent.
So what’s the deal? Did the author just forget about the boisterous councilman from District 1, or did Berg ignore requests for comment?
