The Wall Street Journal has an account of the “tradition-drenched” ceremony that formally ended the Iraq War on Thursday. 

“No words, no ceremony, can provide full tribute to the sacrifices that brought this day to pass,” Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said, according to the newspaper.

By the end of the year, fewer than 200 U.S. military service members will remain in Iraq for a diplomatic mission. The last of some 4,000 others will return to the United States, including a unit returning to Hawaii this weekend.
