A morning email from Darrel Galera, the principal of Moanalua High School, made me want to catch a concert over there sometime soon.

Moanalua High School Music Director Elden Seta was selected to be one of the eight “finest band directors” in the nation who will receive the Bandworld Legion of Honor Laureate Award this year.

The John Philip Sousa Foundation established Bandworld Legion of Honor in 1989, and at least three other Hawaii band directors have joined the ranks.

To qualify, “Recipients have maintained a very high quality concert band program, and have contributed significantly to the profession through dedication to bands and band music,” says Foundation Chairperson Dr. Terry Austin.

Elden will receive his award in December at the 2012 Midwest Band Clinic in Chicago.

One of the qualities that makes Darrel a great principal is his unabashed pride in his faculty and their accomplishments. He goes out of the way to ensure they are appreciated.

Congratulations to Elden Seta! And also to Moanalua Music Directors Rhona Barbosa and Erik Kubota – this prestigious recognition truly reflects the team effort of our excellent team of music directors at Moanalua High School!
